Assessity is an Ontario-based forensic analytics firm specializing in the analysis of legal billing records in connection with Solicitors Act fee assessment proceedings. We provide written analytical reports to Ontario law firms, structured around the nine-factor framework established in Cohen v. Kealey & Blaney (1985), 26 CPC (2d) 211 (Ont. CA).
OUR FOCUS
Fee assessment proceedings require structured, document-based analysis. Assessity was built to fill a specific gap: providing lawyers with a professionally prepared, analytically rigorous report that examines billing records through the Cohen lens without crossing into legal advice or legal representation.
Our work is observational and documentary. We do not draw legal conclusions. We do not testify. We produce written reports in plain language that describe what the billing record shows, where it falls relative to applicable benchmarks, and how each of the nine Cohen factors is reflected in the documentation.
HOW WE OPERATE
Assessity operates on a zero-data-retention (ZDR) model. All materials transmitted to us for analysis are permanently deleted upon delivery of the completed report. We do not retain client files, billing records, or personal information beyond the active engagement period. Our intake and transmission protocols are designed for compliance with PIPEDA and with the professional obligations of law firms handling confidential client information.
REGULATORY COMPLIANCE
Assessity's reports are prepared using language that is consistent with the unauthorized practice of law (UPL) boundary established under the Law Society Act, 2006. We work within those boundaries carefully. Our staff are not lawyers and do not provide legal advice. Our reports are analytical tools for use by lawyers in assessment proceedings.
